What is a season and how often does
this happen?
A season is when a bitch becomes
fertile and receptive to a male dog and usually happens twice a
year.
A first season will usually happen
somewhere between 6 and 9 months of age. A bitch will continue to
have seasons every 6 - 8 months.
What happens during a season?
The first sign of a season is
bleeding from the vulva. Approximately one week after bleeding has
started it will stop and it is at this time that the bitch will be
at her most fertile and receptive to male dogs. A season will
usually last about 2 - 3 weeks but can go on longer.
What happens after a season?
If a bitch has not been mated she
will have another season in approximately 6 - 8 months. Some bitches
may have a "false pregnancy" 4- 8 weeks after her season
where she can produce milk and may nurse toys.
If she has been mated and become
pregnant she will give birth (whelp) 9 weeks later.
What is neutering (spaying)?
Neutering is the removal of the
womb and ovaries, the same as a full ovario-hysterectomy in a
female.
When can I have a bitch spayed?
If a bitch is to be spayed we
recommend that she is allowed to have one season and that she is
spayed four months after the start of the season.
What are the advantages of
having a bitch spayed?
Elimination of seasons and false
pregnancies. Avoidance of potentially serious diseases of the
reproductive organs later in life. Prevention of unwanted
pregnancies.
What are the disadvantages of
spaying?
It is a routine but fairly major
operation, which carries a small element of risk. A tendency to
weight gain which should be controllable with diet. A small
increased risk of urinary incontinence later in life, which is
usually treatable. Some breeds are especially at risk and we may
suggest not spaying in these cases.
Are there any side effects?
Weight gain is reported as the main
side effect, feeding a correct diet can control this. Advice can be
given by one of our pet health advisors regarding feeding.
What happens on the day of the
operation?
Dogs are admitted between 8.00 a.m.
And 8.30 a.m. On the morning of their operation or after an
appointment if they have not been seen recently.
They should not be fed after 8.00
p.m. The night before the operation but can have water overnight.
After a thorough examination a
pre-med injection will be given to help relax the dog. A full
anaesthetic will be given prior to performing surgery. During the
operation and recovery trained nursing staff and monitoring
equipment monitors the patient.
How long is recovery?
Dogs usually go home on the same
day as the operation and recovery fairly quickly. Exercise should be
restricted until the stitches are removed at 10 days by this time
most dogs are usually fully recovered and back to normal.
