In the past at Forest Vets we have been free to use any drug we feel appropriate to treat pets; this has included those drugs authorised for specific conditions in animals and also ‘human’ drugs.
Recent changes in the rules mean that to use unauthorised drugs we are obliged to ask you to consent to their use. Please be reassured that this is done legally when clinically justified, and only when in your pet’s best interest.
Human drugs have gone through stringent safety tests and their use in pets has been well-tried.
Any risk of their use has been thoroughly considered by your veterinary surgeon at Forest Vets.
Many drugs do not have UK marketing authorisation simply due to the prohibitive costs involved, which would never be recovered by the drugs companies through sales. Examples of the types of unauthorised drugs we use are some painkillers, antibiotics, eye drops and anticancer therapy.
